Proof: Kia Shine Did Not Write Best I Ever Had for Drake

I was a little surprised to read that Kia Shine had taken credit for writing Drake’s hit song Best I Ever Had.

Statement from Kia Shine via Twitter:

maan i am not a hater, if someone is blessed with something i commed them and encourage, not discourage,” he wrote earlier this week. “for all the nob believers here is the pic taken from Sept.10th’s Bm1 awards in NY where I won 3 awards for my publishing share of ‘BEST I EVER HAD’…this message is for all the non-believers YES kia shine OWNS 25% OF THE DRAKE SONG ‘THE BEST I EVER HAD’ 3 BMI AWARDS FOR THE SONG GOING #1 ON 3 BILLBOARD CHARTS. GO BUY HIS EP TODAY! MY FAMILY APPRECIATES IT! … its all there! can’t make sh*t like this up

It really didn’t come as much of a surprise when Drake quickly dismissed the rapper’s claims in a recent statement.

Drake’s Statement on Kia Shine’s allegations:

There have been questions posed to me the last few days about the writing of ‘Best I Ever Had’ and I figured I’d take the time to clear the air directly,” he wrote Thursday (September 17) night. “I have never met Kia Shine or worked with him. I wrote the entire composition in Toronto and I borrowed one line from a Lil Wayne song that he produced the BEAT for. The claims of 25% ownership are false and for a artist to brag about splits on a song is distasteful to begin with.

Just in case there is any need for further evidence, a quick search of the ASCAP directory clearly illustrates who is telling the truth here.

And for the record, Best I Ever Had has not won any BMI Awards (and probably isn’t going to since the writers and publishers all seem to be represented by ASCAP).

Drake “Best I Ever Had” (VIDEO)

I’ve gotta say, I’m a little disappointed with this video. Not that I had high expectations, but when the word leaked that Kanye West would be directing this joint, I figured he might have some tricks up his sleeve that would attempt to give this video more of an epic feel (like we generally see in Kanye’s videos).

Instead, we got some story about a basketball team stacked (literally) full of models. And I’m not complaining about that part, but figured one of the best songs of the year would also have one of the best videos and this isn’t even the best video I’ve seen today.

Try again ‘Ye or better yet, go back to making music without auto-tune, please.
