I completely agree. I also think the National Hip-Hop Congress could be instrumental in making this sort of change. I keep telling people this sort of thing has to start as a grassroots movement and that is the sort of thing the Hip-Hop Congress is built for!

I think there are some very real opportunities to implement this model in Hip Hop cultural organizing right now...

Seriously, I've thought about this same business model for at least 2 years since I started a hip hop site. They are absolutely retarded, and don't want any third party to make money at all. They have been screwing themselves since the beginning, they should have enacted policies like you suggest at least 5 years ago. They could do a million things better than their current business model. If they had bloggers sell downloads with some incentive using an i-tunes like program of being able to buy gift certificates so even kids would be able to get the music legally or they could do your plan of having the songs tagged.

I think the artists should just start sponsoring themselves like NASCAR drivers... every piece of clothing they wear should have 50 patches on it ... all from different sponsors. j/k

I don't think the process of selling digital music is dead. The problem was, it just wasn't embraced from the beginning. When VHS came out, the movie industry thought about fighting it because people could copy their movies and share them with each other. Instead they decided to invest in the hardware needed to do this. The movie industry got a decent chunk of change for every blank VHS tape sold.

Had the music industry introduced a similar model from the beginning.... maybe allow sites like Napster to continue, but the label is given $.10/.$20 per song download. Let these companies compete for advertising to stay afloat.

Also, if the labels got together and created their own digital distribution service, they'd be in great shape. The problem is, because they fought it, they are pretty much screwed with iTunes. Unless the labels want to accept a lot less money for songs, I don't see people switching from iTunes to another digital service.

Gotta get back to work. Again great thinking Stu. Keep it up.
