Illseed of Allhiphop rumors fame posted this video today, which is some sort of mock dis track by what may be a British band that sounds a little like Oasis taking shots at Jay-Z. While I’m hoping most of us can see this isn’t real, I also know far to well that many will view twenty seconds of the video and declare war on Oasis…again (see Pauly Shore Racial Rant).
The video did remind me of an interview I read in Spin Magazine the other day with Noel Gallagher, the evil villain from Oasis, who allegedly made inflammatory remarks about hip-hop when it was announced that Jay-Z would headline the Glastonbury Festival in England earlier this year. We all know how that one played out and most hip-hop fans are loving Jay’s rendition of “Wonderwall” much more than the Oasis version they previously adored.
Until recently I wasn’t even sure if Oasis still made music period. I still don’t really care. All I know is that Noel Gallagher is more entertaining in one interview than any artist in the hip-hop industry, so instead of plotting a defense strategy- maybe artists should embrace the guy and realize his swagger is right in line with the hip-hop community.
Here’s a few noteworthy excerpts:
On hip-hop fans discovering Oasis
We have a lot in common with hip-hop. Apart from people pumping shotgun pellets into each other.
Addressing the Jay-Z situation
I’ve hung out with Jay-Z in Tokyo. I’ve seen his show. It’s not my bag, but it’s all right. We have a mutual friend in Chris Martin. So I am a guy who doesn’t like hip-hop — shock, horror. I don’t dislike rappers or hip-hop or people who like it. I went to the Def Jam tour in Manchester in the ’80s when rap was inspirational. Public Enemy were awesome. But it’s all about status and bling now, and it doesn’t say anything to me.
His take on a notorious bar fight involving brother Liam, who has proclaimed innocence in the melee
What? Are you fucking serious? He’s a born fucking liar. I wasn’t there at that bar in Munich, so I won’t cast aspersions. But I ask you, do you think Liam was helping clear away the glasses or assisting an old lady up the stairs when it all kicked off?
What I took away from the article was the following; 1) I think the hip-hop community needs to lighten up a little bit when we hear stories of an “outsider” condemning our culture; 2) Noel Gallagher really hates his brother; and 3) I want to interview this guy, but would prefer for it to occur in a similar setting to a maximum security prison visiting area with a thick glass wall between us- just because I believe if I asked the wrong question, the guy would probably try to kill me. Seriously.
